A pulsating game saw Effingham take the spoils withholding a furious siege of their try line by a desperate Law Society
Effingham started brightly in the game setting up phases in the opposition half and an early penalty attempt by Sam Manning just missed the uprights. The Law Society, through their influential number 8, began to get a foot hold in the game and indispline by Effingham saw a scrum set on the 5 metre line and the number 8 went over to take the lead. Effingham struck back when a loose ball was gathered by young debutant James Bridge who showed great speed to fly in from 50 yards. Manning added the extras to take the lead. The lead was extended further when the home team failed to deal with a bouncing ball, forwards Matt Baldwin and Ben Tame took the ball forward and when the ball came back Manning found number 8 Louis Kasapian who went over for the score.
Law Society then capitalised on more Effingham indiscipline to score 2 further tries in the half to take their lead to 19 – 14 at half time.
Law Society picked the pace up in the second half but the Effingham defence was superb with flankers Dave Hill and George Stuttard putting in great shifts at the coalface. Effinghams scrum started to get the ascendancy with Antony McCormack having his most effective game at tighthead. The penalties came and Effingham kicked to the corner and the line out saw Kasapian blast his way over from 10 yards for his second try of the game and with Manning kicking the extras the away side now led 21 – 19.
Effingham kept up the pressure and their best attacking moment of the half saw centre Charlie Blunt punch up the middle and the ball was swept wide for outside centre Razor Risby to score in the corner. The lead was now 7 points and with Effingham failing to deal with the re-start this led to the frantic last moments which they just held out for to get 2022 off to a great start.
