A hard fought draw in Chessington saw Effingham soak up a lot of early pressure with tremendous defence snuffing out chances. The one dimensional Haileybarian attack was well read by Eagles fly half Matt Johnson who intercepted the ball and sprinted clear to score under the posts. He converted his own try and then 10 minutes later he added a further penalty to give Effingham a 10 point cushion. Haileybarians hit back just on the stroke of half time when they successfully moved the ball through a number of phases, finding space out wide they managed to go in for a score in the corner. 10-5 to Effingham at the half time break.
Effingham struck first in the second period when the ball was moved from right to left and gave full back Joe Triegaardt a run out wide, he chipped over the winger and touched down by the sticks and Johnson duly converted. Injuries hampered the Effingham flow and the home side gained in confidence and their outstanding centre ran a great line to score from 40 metres out to score and this try was swiftly followed by a third try when their flanker captain crashed over to level the scores.
Effingham looked to have stolen the points when centre Tom Risby appeared to have dotted down in the corner but with the referee unsighted he could not give the score. The match remained tied at 17-17.
