Recap

A strong start from the visitors saw then immediately apply pressure into Effingham’s half and within 10 minutes they had scored 2 tries through number 8 Henry Callum. Effingham responded with counter attacking rugby with full back Joe Triegaardt combining well with James Bridge on the wing and the latter went in for the score which Sam Manning converted. Triegaardt then got in on the act when he fielded a loose kick and he strode in from 30 yards.

Indiscipline from Purley John Fisher saw one of their players get sent to the bin and moments later Bridge struck again to take Effingham into a 21 – 10 lead. Just on half time indiscipline again from John Fisher saw a penalty try awarded for a high tackle on Bridge who would have scored his hat trick, and this took Effingham out to a 28 – 10 half time lead.

The second period saw John Fisher pull a try back before Effingham centre, Charlie Blunt was bundled over from close range to take the home side out to a 35 – 17 lead. With the clock ticking down Effingham soaked up a lot of pressure and had a chance to seal the match when a series of forward carries appeared to result in a certain try but with the line at his mercy tight head prop Antony McCormick dropped the ball as he was about to dot it down.

This try let off seemed to galvanise the away side and they quickly scored 2 unconverted tries but Effingham held on for a 35 – 29 victory.
